Jury selection was completed and opening statements began Monday in the trial of Melody Williams.

Williams is accused of shooting a man and setting his body on fire on July 4, 2011. Firefighters found the burned body of L.C. Lyons Jr. in a Sylvania Township home in the 5100 block of Inland Drive.

An investigation revealed Lyons was shot in the head. The state fire marshal's office ruled the blaze as an arson set to cover up the murder. Police believe robbery was the motive.

Williams was originally charged with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery. If convicted, she could face a maximum penalty of life in prison.

She is representing herself in court. A motion has been made to take the jury to locations of the crime scene.
