It's
a venue project managers hope to be similar to Columbia County's Lady
Antebellum Amphitheater. Right now plans to build the Turn on Your Radio music
park is getting neighbors in south Augusta excited.
"I
love outdoor music," said Keith Sims, who lives less than a quarter-mile from the site. "I love concerts."
Developers
say the outdoor amphitheater will soon clear out this weeded field at the
corner of Peach Orchard and Phinizy Roads; bringing in acts of
all genres to perform to nearly 20,000 music lovers.
"Being
a native of Augusta, I know that that was a drive-in theater," said Lawson Graham, project manager of the music park. "It was in the heart
of the county, and it already has the grade-slope up to the stage so everyone
will have good visibility."
Graham said the venue is a $300,000 investment being paid for by
sponsors. Aside from the outdoor concert, carnival rides and a RV and camping
site are in the works.
"I
feel like it's going to be a boom to Augusta," Graham said.
Graham
said he's already negotiating contracts with several vendors, and hopes the park
will bring more business to the area; job opportunities nearby residents can't
wait for.
"There's
people like me: I'm unemployed, and I may even go over there and get a job over
there," Sims said.
Graham says
construction at the site will begin soon, and plans to start throwing concerts
at the amphitheater right in time for Masters Week.
