PORTAGE COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

Tanner, an 11+ year-old Shepherd who had been living at Portage APL for over six months, was adopted Wednesday after suffering terrible neglect.

A couple and their elderly dog came all the way from Mansfield to make Tanner part of their life.

"You could see a spring in Tanner's step that we'd never seen before. It was like he knew that he had a home and that this was his new family!" said Chalan Lowry, Executive Director. "We all got a little teary eyed. This is the best part of our work. When an animal in terrible condition, recovers, thrives and gets a new start. We couldn't be happier."

In late August, a Portage APL Humane Officer was called out to Hiram regarding a dog in bad shape. He arrived to find Tanner emaciated and having a hard time walking. His ribs, pelvic bone and vertebrae were easily visible and much of his hair had fallen out revealing scabs, sores and peeling skin.

Tanner weighed only 62 pounds and was weak. He stayed at the veterinarian for days receiving much needed care and food. They gave fluids, pain medicine and steroids, took x-rays, shampooed his parched skin and did multiple blood tests. He had fleas, was anemic and had low glucose from malnutrition, had spinal arthritis and had not been neutered.

Tanner received the best care possible, and spent months getting stronger and healthier. Through it all, Tanner has been a sweet, kind and friendly dog. Finally, he can live out the rest of his life as a beloved family member.
