BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport is cutting the ribbon on a new terminal. It is the first step to upgrading and expanding the airport.

Tuesday afternoon, Birmingham city leaders gathered for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the opening of 13 new gates, new ticketing counters, a new security checkpoint area and a new baggage claim area.

Leaders say these features will help make travel through Birmingham less stressful. The walls will also feature pieces of Birmingham's history.

Last November, airport officials gave FOX6 a tour of the new terminal when crews were still working on it.

The Airport Terminal Modernization Project will cost $201-million and it is the most significant upgrade since the airport was built in 1931. The project is being done in two phases and the first phase is complete as of today. Once the second phase is finished, you will be able to fly out of terminals "A" and "B" in addition to the current terminal "C."

Airport officials say you will be able to move between the new concourses easily. It also brings the new terminals up to code based on new TSA requirements passed after September 11th.
