Marsh seeks more diversity in constitution rewrite

Posted: Updated:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The commission working on rewriting parts of Alabama's 112-year-old Constitution may soon become more diverse.

Alabama's Constitutional Revision Commission has 16 members and only one, Carolyn McKinstry, is an African-American. McKinstry told The Anniston Star (http://bit.ly/ZBuf2G ) that she can speak for herself, but not all African-Americans in the state.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh of Anniston got the Senate to pass a resolution that would add two members to the commission to increase the diversity. The resolution by the Republican leader drew the support of the Senate Black Caucus. The resolution still must be considered by the House.

Some members of the Constitutional Revision Commission are appointed and others serve by virtue of their state offices. McKinstry was appointed by Marsh.
