THOMSON, GA (RNN) - A private jet with seven on board originating from Nashville crashed Wednesday in east Georgia near Augusta, killing five, including a doctor.
Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board reports the Hawker Beechcraft 390 jet aborted landing at Thomson-McDuffie Regional Airport. It hit a concrete utility pole, which sheered off a wing. The plane traveled another quarter-mile before crashing into a wooded area.
The accident happened around 8:30 p.m.
"When I say the wreckage is breathtaking, I mean it," said NTSB board
member Robert Sumwalt. "You walk up and say to yourself 'Where is the
airplane?' It's a burned out area. It doesn't look like an airplane."
The NTSB says they have obtained airport security camera video and will examine it for clues. They'll also search the wreckage to see if the plane had a flight data recorder.
According to WSMV, Dr. Steven Roth was among those killed in the crash, according to Dr. Steven Davis, a plastic surgeon and partner in The Vein Guys. Four other office staffers were also killed.
Another victim identified was 29-year old Tiffany Porter of Albany, GA, sources told WFXG.
It appears the two pilots survived the crash.
The names of the other victims have not been released pending notification of family members.
"Thank you so much for all of your sweet thoughts and prayers!! Please do continue to pray for us all, we need it so much right now!!! Blessings From The Vein Guys," read a post on the company's Facebook page.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead told WSMV the bodies have been taken to a lab in Decatur, GA, outside Atlanta, for autopsies.
Parts of the plane were scattered for about a mile.
The plane was on the way from Nashville, TN when it over shot the runway and clipped a power line, leaving thousands without power.
This happened a day after a plane from Atlanta ran off the taxiway in Savannah, GA. According to WTOC, no injuries were reported in that mishap.
The sheriff's office told WSMV the plane "is associated with The Vein Guys doctor's office."
The office has locations in Nashville and Augusta.
