AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -
The five Richmond County firefighters
who pulled two-year-old John Thompson from a burning Augusta home last week
received a standing ovation at Tuesday's commission meeting.
The firefighters moved the
unresponsive toddler to safety and performed CPR all the way to the hospital.
Sadly, the toddler died a week later,
but firefighters say they're glad they were able to give the toddler enough
time to provide life to others.
"It's hard on anybody. But given
the fact that we found out the child's organs would be donated kind of makes it
a little easier pill to swallow," said Lt. Daniel Rigdon.
District One Commissioner Bill Fennoy
says a fundraiser will be held to help the toddler's family rebuild their home because their house wasn't insured.
The fundraiser will be Thursday,
February 28 at the Eastview Community Center from 4 to 8 p.m.
Fennoy says plates of food will cost
$10.
