UPDATE: Escaped prisoner in Edgefield County identified

EDGEFIELD COUNTY, SC (WFXG) -

UPDATE: Waltez Latham has been identified as the inmate who walked away from the minimum security Satellite Prison Camp in Edgefield, SC on Tuesday night.

Latham is a resident of Kingstree, SC. He is six feet tall, weighs 182 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes. He was convicted of Conspiracy to Possess with the Intent to Distribute Cocaine and was scheduled for release on August 16, 2019.

The FBI and U.S. Marshals Service were notified along with local and state law. The search continues today for him.

If you know where Latham is, call the US Marshals Service at 803-765-5866 or your local law enforcement agency.

The Satellite Prison Camp in Edgefield is located approximately 25 miles northeast of Augusta. It houses 550 minimum security male inmates.

ORIGINAL STORY:

U.S. Marshals are searching for a prisoner who escaped from the Federal Correctional Institution in Edgefield County, according to the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office.

Willie Thomas lives about 500 feet away from the federal prison which houses maximum and minimum security prisoners; but he thinks the man on the run is a lot farther away than that.

"You don't think he'd stick around?" asked FOX54. Thomas said, "No, I wouldn't, no. Common sense would say if I break out of someplace this is the first place they would look, so I'm getting on up the road."

The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office says the inmate may have walked away from a camp at the facility.

Thomas says it's surprising because he hasn't heard about an inmate escaping from the prison in seven years.

"I don't see how he could have got out of here with their strict rules. There are cars and trucks riding every 15 to 20 minutes there in the area," Thomas, said.

Previous story:

FOX54 has confirmed that a federal prison inmate has escaped from a facility in Edgefield County.

Edgefield County Dispatch also said that the prisoner may have walked away from a camp at the facility.

The U.S. Marshal Service has not yet received reports of an escape, according to Shane McCoy with U.S. Marshal Service.

FOX54 has a crew on the way to the scene and will update you with more details.
