AUGUSTA, GA -
Next week, over 250 Goodwill
Industries presidents and family members from throughout North America will
gather at the Augusta Riverfront Marriott for the annual Goodwill International
Conference of Executives. The theme of the conference is "Mastering Opportunity
with Grace and Grits."
Goodwill Industries is a worldwide federation of over 180 autonomous locally
governed territorial organizations that are linked together by an association
office, Goodwill Industries International that exists in Rockville, MD to serve
member organizations.
Goodwill was founded by Dr. Edgar J. Helms in 1902 to help
people with a "hand-up" to develop their God-given gifts through education,
work and career services. Dr. Helms said as he worked tirelessly to establish
the first 70 autonomous Goodwill organizations: "Friend of Goodwill, be
dissatisfied with your work until every…unfortunate person in your community
has an opportunity to develop to his fullest usefulness and enjoy a maximum of
abundant living."
A highlight of this year's Conference of Executives will be a welcome address
given by Dr. Charles Helms, the grandson of Edgar Helms. This address will be
given on Monday evening when Goodwill presidents will travel to the new Helms
College campus (located on the corner of Washington Rd and Fury's Ferry) to
experience southern hospitality with food from Edgar's Grille, music from the
Dick Goodwin Band and cotillion dancers from Social, Inc.
Helms College is the first
licensed, national accredited and DOE Title IV eligible college to be
established by a local Goodwill affiliate. Helms College is a new unique
experiential learning career college envisioned and developed by Goodwill
Industries serving Middle Georgia and the Central Savannah River Area
(CSRA). Helms College students are offered relevant applied learning
experiences and intensive career guidance to increase graduation rates.
Helms College is designed to ensure that students receive the support they need
to obtain portable credentials and launch middle skill careers.
There will be a session at this
Conference of Executives for Goodwill presidents and CEOs to learn more about
establishing a branch of Helms College in their own territory.
