AVONDALE, OH (FOX19) -

Flames ripped through an Avondale triplex on Saturday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 2 p.m. on Glenwood Avenue.

Multiple engines were called to the house on Glenwood Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

Three adults and eight children were in the house at the time.

A middle-aged man was initially trapped inside of the house. Firefighters were able to save him from a stairwell.

Firefighters say that the fire began near the rear of the house. All three floors of the house sustained heavy damages.

"We were making good progress on the first and second floors," said Assistant Fire Chief Ed Dadosky, "but it started getting away from us a little bit on the third floor."

Firefighters poured huge amounts of water on the flames. The flames, according to neighbors, could be seen several blocks away.

All 11 people got out safely and are being assisted by Red Cross.

"The Red Cross is there to provide comfort, hope, shelter, food and clothing for those who are in need and sometimes just a shoulder to lean on," said Red Cross Communications Officer Soteria Brown.

The building suffered substantial fire, smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
