Convenience stores to add security after string of armed robberies

Posted: Updated:

Deputies are looking for the suspect involved in an armed robbery at a convenience store on Wednesday night on Windsor Spring Road. This is the third armed robbery in a week for the CSRA.

FOX54 spoke to the store manager at McTeer's Food Mart who re-lived the terrifying experience.

Reddy Katukoori is thankful to be alive after a man came into his convenience store with a gun, forcing him to hand over several hundred dollars.

This gas station is the most recent target in a series of armed robberies in the area and the store manager said he is not taking any chances in case it should happen.

"We are going to build a bullet proof [window] all around the counter," said Katukoori.

Measures he did not think twice about especially since this is the not the first robbery in the area. Deputies are looking for a suspect who, just in the last week, robbed convenience stores in Richmond and Columbia Counties.

However, deputies do not believe last night's robbery was the same person.

The manager agrees when he compared the surveillance photos, it appears to be a different man, an unsettling thought for some.

"It does scare me but you have to make your living some sort of way," said Holley Ann Katukoori, sales clerk.

Holley Ann Katukoori told FOX54 she is glad her husband was not shot; she used to work the night shift but recently switched to days because she felt it was safer.

"I feel it's safer if there are two men inside the store than a male and a female," said Holley Katukoori.

A loyal customer and former employee believes safety changes should be made altogether.

"I honestly don't think that stores should stay open all night," said Abbey Fagan.

However, the manager said they can't live in fear.

"We cannot stop business or doing something for this reason," said Reddy Katukoori.

No one was injured during the robbery.  The burglar got away with only a few hundred dollars. If you have any information, contact Richmond County Sheriff's Office.
