Catholics celebrate Ash Wednesday days after Pope announcement

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

It's the beginning of one of the most important Christian seasons: Lent.

Worshippers celebrated Ash Wednesday around the CSRA and the world.

For Roman Catholics, this Lenten season has special meaning, since Pope Benedict XVI just announced he will resign at the end of the month, the first papal resignation in six centuries.

But some Catholics in the CSRA say it adds an example to reflect on this Ash Wednesday.

"I think it's a credit to him and to what he sees his own limitations, as we do kind of here during lent," says Augusta parishioner John Scherer. "He sees where he might not be able to function well, and I think he's doing this for the good of the church."
