AIKEN, SC (WFXG) -
Shaw AREVA MOX Services'
technical support building at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, S.C., recently
earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.
The LEED Gold certification,
awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council, recognizes facilities and
communities for excellence in environmental leadership and energy
efficiency.
The technical support
building is the second building at the MOX project to meet LEED Gold
Certification standards. In 2011, the project's administrative building
was awarded LEED Gold certification. "We are proud to receive the
prestigious LEED Gold certification for another building we have completed at
the MOX project," said Kelly Trice, president and chief operating officer of
MOX Services. "As construction progresses on the MOX project, we are
committed to minimizing our impact on the environment and energy use through
our environmental sustainability policies and our every day action."
The technical support
building will house security, operations and maintenance for the Mixed Oxide
Fuel Fabrication Facility currently under construction for the Department of
Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.
Completed in June 2012, the
technical support building features an energy-efficient white roof that
reflects sunlight and cools the roof, resulting in less heat transfer into the
building and energy savings. Solar panel systems on the roof provide
renewable solar energy for a portion of the building's electricity and hot
water energy needs.
In addition, the building has
a high efficiency heating and cooling system, water conservation plumbing
fixtures and energy efficient windows and siding.
