It's not yet official, but it's likely Richmond Co. School Safety will soon have a new man in charge.
Waynesboro Police Chief Alfonzo Williams was recommended as the new Director of School Safety by Superintendent Dr. Frank Roberson and approved by the Board's Human Resources Committee at Tuesday's meeting.
Williams has served as Police Chief in Waynesboro since 2011, but says the potential move is the right one for him and his family.
"We know that it's the right thing. We feel very good about it," Williams says. "I'm very excited about it, and I'm ready to go to work."
Williams was approved with only one no vote from District 5's Patsy Scott.
However, other board members say they're satisfied with Roberson's pick.
"Everything looks very good on paper," says District 6's Jack Padgett, Jr. "I think his resume looks good, his qualifications, his past work load. And obviously, he's done a good job in Waynesboro."
Williams admits there's a few differences between running a school public safety department and a city police department, but adds there's one big similarity he thinks fits him well.
"Whether you're in a school setting or in a municipality setting, leadership is leadership," he says.
At the end of the day, Williams adds, the purpose of the job is the same.
"It's all about making the environment safer," he says. "If the schools are safe, if the environment is conducive to learning, we all benefit."
The issue moves to next week's board meeting for final approval.
But some board members say it's merely a formality.
"Do you see any reason this won't pass next week?" asks Fox 54's Jake Wallace.
"Oh no," replies Padgett. "I think this week was the criteria."
UPDATE (5:25 p.m.): The Richmond County Board of Education has voted to recommend Waynesboro Police Chief Alfonzo Williams as the new director of Richmond County School Safety and Security.
The motion passed with all but one vote of approval. Patsy Scott of District Five was the only dissenting vote.
FOX54 will have more on tonight at 10.
Fox 54 has learned Richmond Co. Superintendent Dr. Frank Roberson will recommend Waynesboro Police Chief Alfonzo Williams as the new director of Richmond Co. School Safety and Security.
Roberson will make the recommendation to the School Board at this afternoon's meeting.
Williams has served as Waynesboro PD Chief since 2011.
The position became vacant after Richmond Co. Sheriff Richard Roundtree left to run for Sheriff.
Roberson tells Fox 54 Williams was one of "about six people" to interview for the position.
Fox 54 will be at this afternoon's meeting and will have more Tonight at Ten.
