TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -
The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office says four University of Alabama football players were arrested by campus police on Monday.
Eddie Williams, Tyler Hayes, Dennis Pettway and Brent Calloway have been identified as the arrested players. Court documents say the arrests stem from a couple of robberies that occurred in the early morning hours on Monday.
Williams, Hayes and Pettway are each facing two counts of 2nd degree robbery.
One robbery happened around 12:30 a.m. between Paty Parking Deck and Paty Hall. The victim of this robbery, Samuel Anton Jurgens, was allegedly attacked by Williams, Hayes and Pettway. Jurgens claimed that his backpack, containing a MacBook Pro, was taken.
The other robbery happened around 1:20 a.m. in the 200 block of 7th Avenue. Victim, Caleb Lewis Paul, reported that he assaulted and knocked unconscious. He stated that his wallet, containing cash and credit cards, was taken.
Calloway, along with Williams, faces a charge of fraudulent use of a credit card for allegedly using the victims' UA Action credit/debit cards to buy snacks from the vending machine at Bryant Hall.
All of the players were listed as freshmen on the University of Alabama 2012 roster.
This is Williams' second arrest in the last few days. Williams was charged with having a pistol without a permit on Sunday. According to the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Williams got into a disagreement with a gas station attendant at the gas station at 1405 University Boulevard. The clerk told officers that Williams had been acting erratic and threatening and that he had something in the trunk of his vehicle. The clerk had called police when he saw Williams and the other occupants of the vehicle messing with something in the trunk.
The vehicle, a 2007 Honda Accord was stopped by officers at 2nd Avenue and University Boulevard. After patting down Williams, officers say they found a pistol in his pants pocket.
Williams was placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $500 bond on the carrying a pistol without a permit charge.
Bond information on the robbery and fraudulent use charges have not been released yet.
UA Athletic Director Mal Moore issued this statement on the arrests before noon on Tuesday:
"This is a very serious matter and we are very disappointed in the actions that have resulted in the charges against these student-athletes. In this type of situation, the Athletics Department works in conjunction with the University. We will have more to say at the appropriate time."
UA head coach Nick Saban made this statement around 1 p.m. on Tuesday:
"The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as
we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people. The
University and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this
magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the
University of Alabama and not representative of our football program."
