Costumes,
beads and plenty of beer; it's Mardi Gras in downtown Augusta, celebrating its
3rd annual Fat Saturday Pub Crawl.
"When
you have one of those experiences when what I want you to do is just come down
and get drunk somewhere, then, you know, I can't say anything bad about that," said Fischer Hook.
More
than 1400 participants were given a "passport;" collecting stamps from each
restaurant or bar they crawl into.
This year nearly 20 bars and restaurants are
participating in the event. Now, that's a lot of alcohol for pub crawlers,
which is why Richmond County deputies are sending a clear warning to drink
responsibly.
"Think,
plan ahead, get you a designated driver, call somebody if you've have too much
to drink, call a cab," said Sgt. Scott Redmon with the traffic division. "That money that you're spending now will be certainly a
lot less than if you're caught drinking and driving."
RCSO
has upped the number of deputies patrolling downtown tonight; cracking down on
anyone suspected of driving under the influence.
"We don't
want you to have a good time at the expense of your safety, or anybody else
around you on the roadway," Sgt. Redmon said.
All the proceeds collected for the event will benefit the Greater Augusta Arts Council.
