AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -
Marjorie
LaPan shouldered her shotgun and her young nephews carried their less dangerous
water guns to a gun rights rally at the Augusta Common to show their support
for the Second Amendment.
"The
constitution gives us the right to bear arms and it's not just for hunting it's
also for home protection. I just don't think there should be any more
regulations, we have plenty," said LaPan.
Her
husband, Mel is worried that legislation aimed at banning assault rifles and
high capacity magazines are just the first steps to take away their gun rights.
"Our
freedoms are being eroded little by little," Mel LaPan, said.
The
LaPans, along with hundreds of other gun rights supporters came together in the
name of freedom Saturday afternoon with buttons, flags, signs and of course,
plenty of guns.
For
several hours there were speeches from Second Amendment advocacy groups, such
as the Libertarian Party of the CSRA and Georgia Carry.
"We're
not about shooting stuff up and killing people, that's absolutely not what
we're about. We are about safe, responsible self defense and political
citizenship," said rally coordinator Evan Scureman.
He
hopes their message will spread and grab the attention of lawmakers.
"When
they see these things start popping up all over the country, they're going to
take heed," Mel LaPan, said.
Scureman
says the local libertarian party is considering organizing another gun rights
event soon.
