MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The United States Marshals Service (USMS), Roanoke, Alabama Police Department (RPD) and Randolph County Sheriff's Department (RCSD) are confirming the arrest of the fugitive father of new University of Alabama football signee Reuben Foster.

Danny Foster was arrested around 10 a.m. CT Friday in Miami, Florida. He was wanted by the Assault I, Assault II, Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling and Escape I.

The assault charges stem from an incident in which Foster was accused of shooting his estranged wife, Inita Berry Paige, in the back multiple times back in 1996. She was holding Reuben, who was only 18-months-old, who was also shot in the back.

"We were walking to the door and we heard pow-pow, I  thought it was firecrackers," Paige said. "I didn't think nothing of that. And the next thing I know he reached to grab Reuben. And I fell to the ground, and evidently when I turned around, Reuben got shot."

Foster was indicted by a Randolph County Grand Jury on February 6, 1996.

Foster fled the area but was eventually arrested in California on March 14, 1996 and extradited back to Alabama. He later escaped from the Randolph County Jail on December 10, 1996 and had been on the run ever since.

"I never stopped being scared," Paige said. "But I stopped trying to live in that box that it he put me in. It was never a moment that I stopped being scared. But I had to be bigger than that for my kids."

The RPD requested assistance from the USMS Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force (GCRFTF), Montgomery Division, which began a fugitive investigation with assistance from the Macon County Sheriff's Department (MCSD).

Information developed during the course of this investigation led to U.S. Marshals arresting Foster in Miami after 16-years on the run.

Foster had taken on a new identity and denied being Danny Foster when arrested. Only after he was fingerprinted did Foster acknowledge his true identity.

"Foster had been on the run for a while now and this investigation to apprehend him is an example of what can result when tenacious investigators from different agencies work together to get a violent offender behind bars,"said Marshal Arthur Baylor, U.S. Marshal for the Middle District of Alabama.

Paige said the family kept the case a secret during Foster's recruitment, but knew it would come out eventually.  Foster signed a letter of intent with the University of Alabama on Wednesday.

"It's definitely a blessing both ways. It's a blessing that he can relax signing with Alabama, and it's a blessing as a family that we all can relax now."

Paige said Foster is hurt by the situation and is too emotional to discuss the case with the media.
