Congressman Broun to run for Senate seat

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Nearly two weeks after Senator Saxby Chambliss announced he will not run for re-election in 2014. Augusta's very own Congressman Paul Broun (GA-10) officially announced Wednesday he will be running for the open seat.

FOX54's Elizabeth Rawlins sat down with Congressman Broun for his first interview in the CSRA since the big announcement.

"I'm not looking back I'm not turning around, I don't even have a rear view mirror. I'm going to go to the U.S. Senate so I can be that leader," said Congressman Broun.  "I've got a lot of support all over this state, people are excited about this candidacy. They know I've been working hard."

Congressman Broun has served the CSRA in the Tenth District of Georgia since 2007 and said he plans to continue to keep Augusta on the forefront of his agenda.

"Let's get our economy going, let's create jobs so that people here in Augusta will have a good paying job and that's exactly what I have been doing and that's exactly what I will continue to do," said Congressman Broun.

Even though he is the first to announce does not mean he will be the only candidate interested. Congressman Broun said he is prepared for the competition, even if it comes from potential conservative representatives in Georgia.

"I have been leading the way to cut spending,  no other candidate that's going to get in this race or can get in this race has been out there fighting and leading the way to try to stop the out of control spending in Washington," said Congressman Broun.

A message he wants everyone to remember come 2014.

Congressman Broun said even though he is starting to campaign early, he will not let that get in the way of serving the CSRA.
