AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

UPDATE: A scary sight caught many people's eyes along Bobby Jones Expressway when a man on a highway overpass threatened to jump.

After nearly two hours of negotiating, investigators were able to talk 36 year old Sammy Richards out of it.

FOX54 was out there Wednesday morning watching the scene unfold and spoke to family members who were relieved he did not jump.

The man was threatening to jump off the overpass at Deans Bridge Road and Bobby Jones Expressway. Investigators said he was upset about a recent break up with his girlfriend, had taken pills and wanted to end his life.

"The family said he had a history of drug abuse but he had been clean for a very long time," said Sheriff Richard Roundtree.  "They said based on this incident with the break up they feel he fell off the wagon and ingested some kind of narcotics."

Negotiations by a trained crisis and intervention team lasted nearly two hours trying to convince Richards to not go through with it, forcing early morning construction and traffic to come to a standstill.

The turning point wasn't until Richard's sister Lela Cornel was able to speak to him and change his mind. She told FOX54 afterwards, she reminded him about the important things in his life, his family.

"I hope that's what did it, when we talked about his children," said Cornel.

When Richards was finally escorted to safety, his family found a little peace and hope.

"Just for him to get help and solve whatever issue he is going through right now," said Cornel.

"I want to tell him I love him and I hope he doesn't do something like this again," said Richard's younger brother Atrells McFadden.

Words he is thankful he will be able to say to his brother in person.

Richards was immediately taken to the hospital for evaluation. Sheriff Roundtree said no criminal charges are pending at this time.

UPDATE:

Investigators have identified the man who was threatening to jump from the overpass as Sammy Richards.

Crews have escorted a man from an overpass after he threatened to jump. The incident began around 8:30 Wednesday morning.

Family members of the man are on the scene as well. They tell FOX54 the man is 36 years old and that he took some medication this morning before all of this began.
