SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for several Mid-Michigan counties late Wednesday ahead of snowfall that's scheduled to begin tonight.

The Tri-Cities are expected to see 6 to 10 inches of snow over the next 36 hours. Snow totals in Genesee County are expected to range from 4 to 6 inches.

Two systems are merging together and that is drawing up more moisture in the air, which will lead to the significant accumulations on Thursday afternoon and into Thursday night.

The following counties are under the Winter Storm Warning: Bay, Midland, Clare, Isabella, Gladwin, Arenac, Roscommon, Alcona, Ogemaw, Iosco and Gratiot. The rest of Mid-Michigan is under a Winter Storm Watch.

The snow is expected to move in around 12 a.m. Thursday and will continue until Friday morning.

Temperatures on Thursday and Friday are expected to be around 32 degrees.

The weather service in Grand Rapids says 6 to 12 inches of snow could accumulate north of Interstate 96 and 3 to 5 inches in some other parts of West Michigan. In the northern Lower Peninsula, the weather service says 8 to 10 inches of snow could fall.

In and around the state's rural Thumb area, the National Weather Service says 6 to 10 inches is possible by Thursday night as the storm hits the Great Lakes region.
