PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Nearly 1,000 people showed up to pay their respects to the lawyer who died last week when a gunman opened fire in a Phoenix office building.

A service for Mark Hummels started at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Orpheum Theatre. Hummels, along with Steven Singer, died in the Jan. 30 shooting. Another woman was shot. Police said she is expected to survive.

A large screen displayed a picture of Hummels over the stage.

Several people spoke during the service, including Hummels' brother, his best friend and former Arizona Supreme Court Justice Andrew Hurwitz.

CBS 5 News spoke with one of Hummels' colleagues from Osborn Maledon.

"Mark was a unique combination of incredibly intelligent and thoughtful and humble with a very dry sense of wit and kind of fearless too," said Tim Eckstein.

Another colleague said that there is a huge void left at the law firm.

"He was just as good as they come with dealing with people," said Randy Nelson. "That comes along so rarely that when you lose it in the way we have it's especially unbearable.  The loss goes far beyond the people who knew Mark.  The mark he was yet to make is a very big loss for all of us."
