Authorities investigate Tallapoosa Co. murder

Posted: Updated:

A murder tears apart a Tallapoosa County family. It happened Saturday morning in the Waverly community.

It was the kind of chaos Robert Black, Jr., can't even begin to comprehend. Black says he was inside the family home on Seals Street when he heard at least one gunshot.

"At first it sounded like a car had backfired and we came out and realized my dad had been shot," said the 25-year old Black.

Black says it was his half-brother 40-year old Tracey Beavers who shot their dad inside the car next to the home.

"We came out and asked him why, why, why?" Black said.

Robert Black says when he realized what happened he literally chased his half-brother up the road but never caught him.

Beavers was later captured 12 hours after the shooting at a home in Lee County by Opelika police. Tallapoosa County sheriff Jimmy Abbett declined to say whether Beavers confessed, saying the investigation is still on-going. Abbett says they've charged Beavers with murder. This is not only the county's first homicide for 2013 but rare for a family member to allegedly shoot and kill a relative.

"This is unusal for us. We don't see it that often," said Sheriff Abbett.

The sheriff tells WSFA 12 News Tracey Beavers made his initial court appearance this morning. Beavers' bond has been set at $50,000.

Robert Black tells us his dad was a Vietnam veteran and did odd jobs over the years including construction.

"He was a good man and did his best to provide for the family," said Black.

Robert Lewis Black was 59-years old. Mr. Black would have been 60 on Tuesday.
