SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane is calling for talks between business owners and the city about safety in the entertainment district and Old Town area after a nightclub bouncer died Saturday morning from stab wounds suffered Jan. 27.

"In changing times, there are things that we need to address," Lane said.

Tyrice Thompson was a 27-year-old father and former football player at Arizona State University.

Police said he was stabbed five times outside the Martini Ranch in Scottsdale where he worked as a security guard.

"What we're trying to do here, and what I've specifically asked here, is to make sure we bring the parties together on a professional level. That's City Hall's job," Lane said.

Lane said he wants to know whether bar and restaurant's security, maintenance and operational plans (SMOs) should be updated on a set schedule. Right now, an establishment only has to submit one once in order to get a conditional-use permit.

"It's a one-time establishment of a plan right now, and in some instances that's been years ago. So the idea (is) that we want to take a look at (SMOs) maybe not every year, but maybe every few years," Lane said.

Dos Gringos bar manager John Horsman said the tragic stabbing is a rare incident.

"I've been bartending in this town for almost 10 years, and I can't think of another incident like that," Horsman said.

He said his establishment's security plan works. With security cameras, trained bartenders and a full security staff, he does not think a change to his SMO is necessary.

"We probably won't change anything. I mean we've always been pretty good about it," Horsman said.

Lane said he does not have a set time frame for when talks will begin between the city and Old Town business owners.
