A press conference at the Richmond County Sheriff's Office has revealed new details about an early morning deputy-involved shooting that left a suspect dead.
Following protocol, Sheriff Richard Roundtree held the conference jointly with Pat Morgan from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Morgan and his office will be conducting an outside agency investigation of the incident.
The press conference revealed that the incident began at 2:20am when deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on Chaz Williams, 21, who had outstanding traffic offenses. Williams fled, prompting RCSO to initiate a vehicle pursuit.
The pursuit ended at Church's Chicken on the 3200 block of Wrightsboro Road when Williams crashed his car into a standing object. Williams then exited the vehicle, fleeing on foot.
Williams was then located in Apartment 133 at the Fox Den Apartments, where deputies attempted to arrest Williams.
During the course of the arrest attempt, a deputy discharged his firearm, which discharged into Williams.
The deputy who discharged his firearm has been revealed as Michael Woodard, a five year veteran of the RCSO. Deputy Woodard is assigned to the road patrol, and is currently on his regular off-time.
There are no immediate plans to suspend or discipline Woodard for his actions, which Sheriff Roundtree believes were justified, according to RCSO's "use of deadly force" policy.
An autopsy will be performed tomorrow morning on Williams at the Augusta Crime Lab. The press conference revealed that Williams had more than one gunshot wound, but the Crime Lab will have to determine cause of death.
A knife was believed to be involved in the incident on the part of Williams, but officials could not confirm how. The girlfriend of Williams told FOX54 that Williams was trying to commit suicide with a knife when deputies shot Williams. Officials could not confirm that information at this time.
Sheriff Roundtree assured the media that the investigation will be "transparent."
FOX54 has learned new details about the early morning shooting between a deputy and suspect, that left the suspect dead.
Family members have told FOX54's Elizabeth Rawlins that the suspect killed was Chaz Williams, 21, of Augusta. Williams lived with his girlfriend in one of the apartments at Fox Den.
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are on the scene of a deputy involved shooting at the Fox Den Apartments off of the 3200 block of Wrightsboro Road.
Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree has confirmed to FOX54 that a shooting between a deputy and a suspect occurred around 4am, resulting in the death of the suspect.
The investigation into the shooting is being handled by the GBI. Sheriff Roundtree said that further information will be released later today.
FOX54 has a crew on the scene and will keep you updated.
