Police investigate bomb threat at youth center

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

There were some very tense moments at Rocketown Youth Center Sunday afternoon after someone threatened to blow up the building. Dozens of kids were inside when Metro police evacuated the building.

What started out as a fun afternoon for dozens of teens ended abruptly when Metro police officers surrounded Rocketown. Officers were called to the building at about 4 p.m. after someone reportedly threatened on Facebook to blow it up. Police searched the facility and questioned workers for over an hour, but there was no sign of a bomb.

It's the second time this week the faith-based outreach center made headlines. On Tuesday, Wes Breedwell, a former Rocketown employee, blasted management on Twitter, claiming he was fired for wearing a T-shirt supporting same-sex marriage.

In response to Breedwell's claims, the nonprofit released a statement:

"Rocketown does not comment on personnel issues, but, generally speaking, an employee would not be fired for expressing opinions on marriage. At Rocketown, we are welcoming and accepting of all youth. We reach out to all kids, are inclusive and very much care about acceptance of youth from different ethnicities, sexual orientations, financial backgrounds and religions."

But that did little to pacify Breedwell's supporters. Many took to Rocketown's Facebook page expressing their anger.

Jon Ellen wrote, "They should not be imposing those ignorant and negative beliefs on others."

There's no word who posted the threat on Facebook or if there's a connection between Sunday's bomb scare and Breedwell's firing. Channel 4 News reached out to Rocketown, but their representative said they couldn't comment.
