Proposed gun range sparks controversy

LOVELAND, OH (FOX 19) -

An indoor gun range proposed by the city is sparking controversy.

Loveland resident Steve Ling says he is interested in opening an indoor gun range in Loveland or Madeira. One of the sites he is looking at is in a shopping center near a school. Loveland Elementary School is right down the street on Loveland and Madeira Road.

The Board of Education expressed concern about the proposal. Some parents think that guns located so close to a school would be a threat to students, staff and teachers. In the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, some folks are nervous about having the range so close to a school.

Ling says the range would be good for the economy and very safe.

The Mayor of Loveland, Rob Weisgerber, is urging the public to weigh in on the proposed shooting range.  Weisgerber says he understands that firearms are an emotional issue, but he says a new business would help the local economy.

"There's always the benefit from an economic development standpoint," said Weisgerber. "You know when the state of Ohio has cut a lot of revenue to local communities. They've kept a lot of local government funds to make their own balanced budget. We have to keep our budget balanced."

Ling is also looking at a site in Loveland's Industrial Park. Weisgerber believes that this second location would go a long way to easing the community's concerns.

Plans for the indoor range are only preliminary at this time. More details will be revealed when the Loveland zoning commission meets on February 5.
