Madison main break wastes millions of gallons of water

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A large water main break in Madison was repaired more than 12 hours after the problem first occurred.

The break happened around 9 p.m. Thursday on Gallatin Pike  from Due West Avenue to Webster Street.

Anywhere between 5 to 7 million gallons of water leaked out overnight.

The surrounding businesses were without water for about two hours Friday morning.  The ground, sidewalks and streets that were torn up during the leak are now being fixed.

The Madison Suburban Utilities District said that they don't know how long it will take to restore the streets back to their original condition.

A supervisor said when it's cold the ground can shift, causing these problems. The water poured out due to old valves not closing and sanitation issues.

The Madison Suburban Utilities District said they've had a total of three breaks in 24 hours, including two others in Goodlettsville.
