Fast and Furious straw buyer sentenced to 2 years

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

A man was sentenced to two years in prison for working as a straw buyer for a gun smuggling ring that was monitored in the federal government's bungled investigation known as Operation Fast and Furious.

Erick Avila Davila was sentenced Wednesday for the conspiracy charge to which he pleaded guilty last summer.

Davila admitted to being a straw buyer for the ring and claiming that about 12 guns he bought were for him when he was actually making the purchases on behalf of the ring.

Court records show that 15 people in the alleged 20-member ring have pleaded guilty so far.

Federal authorities faced criticism for allowing suspected straw gun buyers to walk away from gun shops with weapons, rather than arrest the suspects and seize the guns there.
