PORTAGE COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -
An 11-year-old German Shepherd rescued from severe neglect is now looking for his forever home.
In late August, a Portage APL Humane Officer was called out to Hiram regarding a dog in bad shape. He arrived to find a German Shepherd that was emaciated and having a hard time walking. His ribs, pelvic bone and vertebrae were easily visible and much of his hair had fallen out revealing scabs, sores and pealing skin.
The dog, named Tanner, was taken to the veterinarian. He weighed only 62 pounds and was weak. He stayed at the veterinarian for days receiving much needed care and food. They gave fluids, pain medicine and steroids, took x-rays, shampooed his parched skin and did multiple blood tests. He had fleas, was anemic and had low glucose from malnutrition, had spinal arthritis and had not been neutered.
While treatment and care were being given, the owner(s) came forward and were charged with animal cruelty. Upon conclusion of court proceedings last week, Tanner became "official" property of Portage APL.
Tanner received the best care possible. He spent months getting stronger and healthier. At his age, later discovered to be 11, recovery is slow. He made weekly trips to see the doctor and monitor his progress. He continued necessary medications, baths and checkups. By October, he had gained about 7 pounds. His skin was looking better and he was more mobile.
Through it all, Tanner has been a sweet, kind and friendly dog. As of now, Tanner weighs in at 79 pounds and he gets around pretty well. He is still a little thin, but for his age, that is normal.
Tanner will be neutered and placed up for adoption. He is elderly, and may not have many years ahead of him. Portage APL only hopes that someone will open their hearts to a senior dog who is deserving of love.
