HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

There was a blast from the past on Thursday - a sound from the 60s at the Marshall Space Flight Center.

It was the hot fire test of the Saturn V, F-1 engine gas generator, the little engine that starts the bigger engine.

This particular F-1 has been in mothballs at the Smithsonian was and pulled out by young engineers who want to help build a more modern, yet less expensive version for NASA's massive deep space rocket.

Chris Crumbly with NASA said Marshall engineers have already performed 11 tests on the engine to make sure they understand how it works.

They hope a more advanced, lighter, smarter version could be built and chosen to propel the new space launch system to the moon, Mars, and beyond.
