Some Columbia County facilities may become pricier

Posted: Updated:

It's been five years since the rental price of Columbia County's Savannah Rapids Pavilion and the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center has gone up.

Now, Columbia County's Community and Leisure Services Division director Barry Smith is looking to raise the cost to use the facilities.

"We're raising as much as 10% and others as little as 2%."

Smith hopes to raise the rate at the pavilion from $2,700 for 12 hours to $3,000 for a 14 hour rental.

"We run it like a business so we need to gain revenue and operations that can keep improvements happening at the facilities."

Commissioners have approved the price hike; but before the rent rates can increase commissioners need to give final approval during their meeting on February 15.

Smith is also hoping establishing a new fee will stop an old problem.

"A lot of charitable organizations plan and organize these 5k runs for it to start and end at Savannah Rapids Park but we're not cognizant of it, we weren't notified about it."

He says they will start charging charitable organizations $100 to use the pavilion's canal towpath for races; he says the fee will also protect large groups from double booking.

Smith tells Fox54 raising the rental fees will bring the county an extra $300,000 a year.
