The city of Nashville has created a list of what it considers the 27 most dangerous intersections in town. Now the public works department wants the public to weigh in on what improvements ought to be done.
One of those intersections is at Elm Hill Pike and Royal Parkway, where drivers coming down a hill round a series of curves that end at a red light. The intersection has a high number of rear-end collisions.
That intersection landed on Metro's list of the most dangerous intersections, which is based on the number of wrecks as a percentage of daily traffic.
"Basically we wanted to focus on those with the highest rate of accidents," said Gwen Hopkins-Glascock, a spokeswoman for public works.
Metro has a plan they hope will help warn drivers before they find themselves suddenly at the red light on Royal Parkway.
"We propose to add some overhead flashing beacon signs for traffic coming around the hill," Hopkins-Glascock said.
Metro has a budget of $7 million to improve the 27 intersections on its list.
The work should also make the intersections safer for pedestrians and should alleviate traffic back-ups at intersections when the traffic signals get overhauled.
The public hearings will be held Thursday, Jan. 24 at the Madison Library, 610 Gallatin Pike South from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. A second informational meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 29 at Edmonson Pike Library, 5501 Edmondson Pike, from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.
