Toledo city council members unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday night that recognized 14 area schools for their academic excellence.
Most of the schools recognized were in the Toledo Public Schools (TPS) district, but several were also from Washington Local Schools. They were all rated "excellent" by the state for the 2011-12 school year.
The TPS schools were the Toledo Early College High School, Toledo Technology Academy, MLK Jr. Academy for Boys, Elmhurst Elementary, Grove Patterson Academy, the Maritime Academy, Toledo Preparatory and Fitness Academy, the Autism Model School, and the Toledo School for the Arts.
The Washington Schools were McGregor, Monac, Shoreland and Wernert elementaries, and Washington Junior High.
Grove Patterson Academy Principal Herneika Johnson gave the secret to their success:
"Great parents, parent participation, and an awesome staff – that is how we got there. Plus, we use ‘Success for All' for our reading curriculum, and we say that is the heartbeat of our school and our teachers swear by ‘Success for All.'"
Councilman Tom Waniewski said the excellent ratings are a proud moment for all the schools, and for council members, as well.
