MARTINEZ, GA (WFXG) -

Several Columbia County churches have washed away the mess vandals left them overnight Sunday, and if caught, the vandals could be in hot water.

"Because they vandalized places of worship, it's a felony," says Capt. Steve Morris. "If convicted, they would face imprisonment of one to five years, and fines and probation as well. And they will be charged with felonies regardless of their age."

The Columbia Co. Sheriff's Office is investigating, but have no suspects yet.

Four churches on Old Petersburg Rd. and Kelley Park were vandalized sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Messages were spray painted on church doors and signs, but by Tuesday, almost all of the paint has been cleaned.
