Math teacher faces firing over Facebook pic of students

AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

A math teacher at Buchtel Community Learning Center faces firing after posting an inappropriate picture on her personal Facebook account.

According to the district, Melissa Cairns took a picture of some of her students with duct tape covering their mouths and posted the photo with the caption "Finally found a way to get them to be quiet!!!"

An Akron Public Schools employee saw the picture and notified a supervisor. Cairns was on paid leave until the board voted to consider termination on Jan. 14. She has been on unpaid leave since Jan. 15.

Cairns received a letter to that effect on Jan. 16, and on Tuesday, Jan. 22, she requested a hearing before a referee re: her potential termination.

A referee will now be chosen, a date set, and then an official hearing held. The referee will then forward his or her opinion/recommendation to the school board for a final vote.
