Drilling
nails into 2X4 and brushing on primer. These volunteers are
celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a less traditional way.
"We
call it not a day off, but a day on, and a chance to give back to our
community."
Monday
morning Georgia Power and Southern employees came to Action Ministries of
Augusta for their annual MLK Day of Service project.
This
year the group is building and painting 30 bed frames for selected veterans and
disadvantaged families.
"Martin
Luther King Jr. said it's better to serve others, and that's what we're trying
to do here today, is try to serve others."
Just
a few doors down, AmeriCorps Vista are packaging emergency kits full of
shampoos and soap to help needy and homeless people around the community.
For
their annual MLK project the United Way of the CSRA sponsored AmeriCorps Vista's
Day of Service. Deodorant, toothpaste and other toiletry items are packed into
plastic bags. Volunteers are collecting and filling more than 2,400 orders of
emergency hygiene kits for several homeless agencies across the area.
"It's
really a good feeling. It's just a way that we can reach out and feel close to
the community to do good and help others experiencing poverty."
Volunteers
say they're able to answer what Dr. King calls one of life's most persistent
and urgent questions: ‘What are you doing for others?" And today, these
volunteers have the opportunity to answer in a positive way.
