Genesee County celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Volunteers from throughout Genesee County celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Carriage Town Mission, helping preserve King's memory.

"It's special, special cause that's what Martin Luther King would want, so that's what we're doing here," said Cody Sanders, a volunteer reader.

The volunteers are helping to preserve his legacy of giving back to the community, and teaching our children the importance of caring for others, including taking time to just read stories to some very eager ears.

"Today is more of an important day, because Martin Luther King did say give with your heart and when you do give with your heart, I mean it's worth it," Sanders said. "Look at all the smiles on these kids faces, it's all worth it."

Some of the volunteers came from the local colleges and universities and they looked at today's event as a way to help the community in a way they're familiar with.

"It's an opportunity to give back and share some of our talents," said Maureen Miller from Baker College, Flint. "Reading is a talent everybody enjoys and we can share with the children who are off school today."

Parents read alongside their children at the mission today, something they were all very proud to be able to do and to make the King legacy real for their kids.

"The fact that even though he had passed long before they were born, it was important for them to understand what Martin Luther King wanted others to do as well," said Candi Walters.

Walters' fifth-grade daughter Myrna gave a very insightful observation, for being so young.

"You can never be too old or too young to give back, because even if you give a little bit, that can still make a really big difference," said Myrna Walters.
