Active shooter seminar set for Wednesday night

Posted: Updated:
NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

A seminar is being held in New Britain Wednesday night to teach people how to respond in an "active shooter" situation.

In light of what happened last month, organizers told Eyewitness News that registration has skyrocketed for the course planned to be held at the YMCA in the city at 7 p.m. In fact, the attendance was expected to be doubled.

"The basic theme is, run, hide and fight," said trainer Vincent Riccio, who is leading the course Wednesday night.

On Dec. 14, Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother at their home, then went to Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed 26 children and adults.

Following the shooting, Riccio said residents in Connecticut are realizing they are not immune to random acts of violence.

"You have to survive it," he said. "You have to do what you need to do to survive it."

According to Riccio, the purpose of the course is to help people protect themselves.

"The police can only do so much, they can only be in so many places," he said.
