House destroyed by large fire in north Nashville

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A fast-moving fire destroyed a home Wednesday afternoon in northwest Nashville.

Firefighters quickly realized there wasn't much they could to save the home as the fire broke out around noon in the 4300 block of Sulphur Creek Road.

"It's pretty extensive. Upon my arrival, the flames were shooting about 25, 30 feet in the air. The roof was completely engulfed," said District Fire Chief Ardrel Sawyers.

The blaze presented two major problems for firefighters - first: the water supply. There was no hydrant near the home, so crews shuttled in water from half-a-mile away at Eaton's Creek Road.

"It's not typical, but this is what we have to do in rural areas where the plugs are not convenient to the incident," Sawyers said.

However, the biggest problem was a small concrete bridge that kept crews from getting close to the house. The bridge was not sturdy enough to handle the weight of a heavy fire engine, so that created a much longer pull to get water on the flames.

The fire burned for more than an hour, and the home is a total loss.
