FLINT, MI (WNEM) -
The concern over violence in Flint continues to grow. Some argue Flint's latest homicide should be a call to the masses. A man was shot and killed at a funeral service at a local church over the weekend.
"For someone to walk into the house of the Lord and take another person's life, we're still not going to get involved, come on now," said Ken Dickerson Sr.
Dickerson Sr. said every person in the city of Flint needs to step up. And he let it be known at town hall meeting Tuesday night at the Vernon Chapel AME Church. The meeting was put on by the Flint Lifelines.
"Whenever the place that you would feel the most secure has been jeopardized, that lets you know the seriousness of this," said Pastor Jeff Hawkins.
About 75 community members showed up to share their outrage over the violence in the city at Tuesday's forum.
"I just don't like people getting killed, and that's it," said youngster Kevon Cox who was at the meeting.
So far in 2013, there have been four homicides in the city.
"Taking it to the next level, people are going to have to come in together," said Nazree DeLoach, a Flint resident.
Flint Lifelines is a group of city leaders put together to address the crime issue. The Lifelines also combats crime by addressing problems before they get out of control. In fact, four individuals got a lifeline Tuesday night.
"We've made cases against some non-violent offenders who are wreaking having in the neighborhoods and what we do is we call them in and offer them an opportunity to change their life," said Flint Police Chief Alvern Lock.
Those who showed up will have the resources to clean it up. Those who were a no-show will have warrants issued for their arrest.
Tuesday night's forum also gave community members a chance to learn about resources available if they know of somebody who is involved in crime or would like to have police check a certain situation out. Those at the meeting said now is the time for everyone to get involved.
