FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -

A Scottsdale hiker reported overdue from a trip to the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff is recovering after he was found in -1 degree cold early Sunday morning.

The man, who was not named, had wrapped himself in an emergency blanket and was preparing to spend the night when a ground search team found him around 3 a.m. above the Kachina Trail, about half a mile from the Kachina Trail parking area, Coconino County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Gerry Blair said.

He had been missing since 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

There was considerable concern because authorities did not believe that the hiker had any winter hiking experience and may not have been properly equipped for hiking in cold and snowy conditions.

An Arizona Department of Public Safety air rescue helicopter from Kingman was quickly put into service. The helicopter crew used night vision goggles and a forward looking infrared camera.

Ground search teams were deployed in a snow cat and on foot.

When the man was found, searchers helped walk him out to the trailhead, where he was met by a Guardian Medical Transport ambulance for treatment and transport to the Flagstaff Medical Center.

There was no word on his condition.
