Dozens of schools closed Friday due to icy roads

MILLINGTON, MI (WNEM) -

Dozens of schools just North of Mid-Michigan closed Friday due to icy back roads.

The news came as a pleasant surprise to students, like Lillia Sherman. "I'm happy," she exclaimed.

The superintendent of Millington schools said they did a road check early in the morning and found a serious ice crown on secondary roads. So, they decided it wasn't safe for buses to transport their students.

With so many kids home from school many parents, like Lillia's father Mike Sherman, decided to take the day off as well. "I was extremely excited so we could spend the day as a family," said Sherman.

Dozens of people, including the Shermans, ended up at Mcpherson's Family Restaurant in Millington. Linda Case was determined to meet her friends -- even though she says part of the drive was a little tricky. "We live off from the road quite a ways. I slipped and slid all the way through, got on the main road easy going all the way through," said Case.

While school officials weren't comfortable sending buses out on back roads, folks who live here say it's nothing they can't handle. "Nothing really keeps me from joining friends, bad roads or whatever," commented Case. "We've lived here 41 years so we're always prepared.  This is living in the rurals," added her friend Linda Watson.
