Bay City girl heads to Ann Arbor for kidney transplant

Jessica Schwerin Jessica Schwerin
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Right now 10-year-old Jessica Schwerin is at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. She's scheduled to get a kidney transplant today.

Jessica suffers from kidney disease. Her mom, Stacey Schwerin, is elated this day has arrived.

"I'm so glad it's finally here. I'm nervous. I'm excited. I'm scared. I'm everything," Stacey Schwerin said.

On Thursday the Schwerins traveled to Ann Arbor with Brian Martindale. Martindale heard about Jessica's plight. He called the hospital to see if he could donate one of his kidneys. He was a match.

"Yeah I'll just call her my other kidney from now on," Martindale said.

The group got to take a limo ride to the hospital thanks to Vinny Stewart. The owner of the Stockpot Diner loaned his limo for the trip.

"It would take Jessica's mind off what she's going there for. She'd be so happy there," Stewart said.

Jessica's classmates at Linsday Elementary School lined up outside of the school to wish Jessica well. They waved and cheered as they sent her off.

"These kids take care of each other. And this community takes care of each other. And I love it," Principal Deb Vansumeren said.

Meanwhile, Stacey Schwerin is asking everyone to think of her little girl today as she goes through this surgery.

"Please, everybody pray. Pray, pray, pray. Not only for Jessica but for all the other children in the hospital going through this kind of stuff," Schwerin said.

UPDATE: TV5 has since learned that Brian Martindale came out of surgery and says he is doing well, but is in a bit of pain. And the same goes for Jessica. Her mother says she's recovering and is sleeping quite a bit.

The public can participate in a card party fundraiser for Jessica. Cards with $1 in them to help offset the cost of her surgery and travel can be sent to:

Sula's Family Salon, 810 N. Euclid Ave, Bay City, MI 48706.
