AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -
An early morning high-speed chase that crossed state lines has left the driver and passenger of the offending vehicle dead.
Derrick Darden and Deante Darden, brothers, were pronounced dead on the scene.
A Richmond County deputy of the DUI division attempted to pull over a 2007 Chevrolet Impala on the 800 Block of Broad Street.
When the deputy approached the car, the driver took off at a high speed rate.
Traveling at speeds more than 100 mph, the chase continued into South Carolina on the Gordon Highway Bridge.
The driver crashed into a tree on Carolina Springs Road.
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office confirms that Deputy Bert Gates was the deputy who initiated the chase. Gates is a 22-year veteran of the RCSO, and is currently assigned to the DUI Task Force. RCSO says that Deputy Gates is not under investigation, and followed proper procedure.
