Aiken robbery victim shocked but grateful

Posted: Updated:

Aiken County Public Safety are still looking for the suspect who burglarized four homes and 12 automobiles early Tuesday morning.

Deputies say several of the incidences occurred after people left their homes and cars unlocked.

"Check your cars, check your property and we are asking that you lock up what's valuable to you," said Cpl. Jeremy Hembree.

The robbed homes are located near downtown Aiken including Delina Hickey's home, listed on South Carolina's National Registry of Historic Places.

"They probably took a screw driver or they were able to jimmy the lock until they were able to get it open," said Hickey.

Hickey is thankful her family is safe and unharmed but is still in shock after her home was invaded.

"The police came in and the scariest part was they came around and made us stay upstairs. They went around the house with a great big gun looking to see if anybody was still in the house," said Hickey.

But deputies found no trace to who entered the home.

Hickey and her husband have lived there for 2 years with their 3 dogs and have never felt unsafe in their neighborhood until now.

"This is the first time we have ever had anything like this happen," said Hickey. "It's a wonderful neighborhood and the neighbors are terrific people."

Once the burglar made it inside, they took her purse and car keys but Hickey says there is probably a reason why they didn't take more.

"I think whoever it was heard the dog barking and us telling her to be quiet," said Hickey.

Moxie, her 2 year old dog, she says is her heroine.

However, she plans to install a real security system and has already replaced the locks.

Aiken Public Safety Department ask if you have any information to call Crimestoppers at (888) 274-6373. There is a reward.
