Experts warn flu outbreak could worsen

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Flu season has started early and hospitals across the country are swamped with cases.

So far 41 states, including Michigan, are reporting widespread cases of the flu and the Center for Disease Control says it's only going to get worse.

A total of 18 deaths have been reported, and the flu season usually doesn't peak until mid to late February.

Doctors agree the best protection from the flu is the vaccine.

However, reports show only about 30 percent of Americans have received the shot this year.

The flu is also hitting Mid-Michigan hard.

Covenant Hospital in Saginaw said they are being forced to turn away patients because of the crowded emergency room.

Covenant is one of several local hospitals that have put visitor restrictions in place in an effort to control the spread of the flu.
