House Democrat leader to announce school safety plan

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (AP) -

The top Democrat in Arizona's House of Representatives plans to outline details of a school and community safety plan he expects to introduce in the Legislature.

Minority Leader Chad Campbell says the plan he'll outline Wednesday will be comprehensive.

Some items Campbell will push are increased mental health funding and some gun control items. He's already said he wants to restore funding cut from the state's school resource officer program and repeal parts of a 2012 law requiring police agencies to sell rather than scrap seized guns.

Because the Legislature is controlled by Republicans the proposal stands little chance of passing intact.

But Gov. Jan Brewer is considering adding school resource officer funding to her budget. And Attorney General Tom Horne wants one educator in each public school armed.
