APPLING, GA (WFXG) -
Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) kicks off the first week of the new year in his district. His annual rural listening tour began today in Columbia County.
Congressman John Barrow began the tour Monday morning in Appling, giving constituents the opportunity to meet with their congressman and ask questions, specifically about the farm bill.
"Today's meeting was for questions about the farm bill, any agriculture related businesses that are in the area were invited to come and find out more about the bill and what Congressman Barrow could do to help the local farmers or any producers," said agent Tripp Williams of Columbia County Agriculture & Natural Resources.
People came from all over the Augusta area taking advantage of the rural tour.
"I want to see milk not be eight dollars a gallon which is where we are heading," said constituent Thomas Turner.
However, others took advantage of the time to address different issues.
Congressman Barrow voted against the American Tax Payer Relief Act and many constituents are concerned about the fiscal ‘cliff' deal Congress passed last week.
Congressman Barrow explained rates are higher than they have to be.
"That's one of the reasons I voted against the fiscal 'cliff' measure because what it does is raises rates on the current tax code and what we need to do is replace the current tax code with something they can bring in the revenues they need while lowering the rates for everyone," said Congressman Barrow.
A discussion that overshadowed the main purpose of the meeting, for the farm bill.
"I think it's one of those things with everything else that's going on in the world, there was a bigger issue people wanted to be addressed other than farming or agriculture," said Williams.
