UPDATE: Cyclist deputy released from hospital; driver charged in incident

MCCORMICK COUNTY, SC (WFXG) -

FOX54 has learned that the cyclist hit on Furys Ferry Road in McCormick County has been released from the hospital.

Mark Benson, a bicycle deputy with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, has been hospitalized at GHS Medical Center since he was struck. He has now been released, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has also announced that they will be charging Kathy Howle, of Evans, with driving too fast for conditions. Howle allegedly struck Benson with her Ford F-150 while driving along Furys Ferry Road.

FOX54 was the only television news crew on the scene when Benson was taken from the scene via air ambulance.

UPDATE: A cyclist hit on Furys Ferry Road Monday is listed in "fair" condition. Officials confirm the man's identity as Mark Benson, a Columbia County Deputy. We are told he was off duty at the time of crash.

No word on charges at this time.

ORIGINAL STORY: A medical helicopter is being brought in following a crash involving a bicycle on Furys Ferry Road. The crash happened around 3pm just over the South Carolina line in McCormick County.

No word yet on how the crash happened, but we are told one person is injured. Traffic will be impacted. Crews on the scene are asking that drivers avoid the area if possible. No word on the victim's injuries at this time.
